Are there many types of pillows?

Pillows have come a long way and you may just be surprised of how many types there are out there. The most common are bed pillows. There are also lots of sub-categories of bed pillows to choose from.

Bed pillows are usually rectangular in shape and usually measures at 20 x 36 inches in dimensions. These measurements do vary at times according to the bed size.

Another type of pillow is the orthopedic pillow. These pillows are specifically designed to support various parts of the body. Neck pillows for instance are a type of orthopedic pillow. Neck pillows support the deep area of the neck and help in neck alignment. They are also known as cervical pillows.

Another type of orthopedic pillow would be the common u-shaped travel pillow. They support the head very well in a sitting position. Then there are donut pillows and lumbar pillows. Donut pillows, as the name suggests, is a round pillow with a hole in the middle. It is for people with tailbone injury or anyone who are suffering for any discomfort in the buttocks area. Lumbar pillows support the curve on our backs an dare usually used on chairs and car seats.

Another type of pillow would be the decorative pillow. Decorative pillows are almost always square in shape and usually decorated with patterns that compliment the area that they are decorating.

The pillows found in different parts of the world have slightly different design and shapes but generally serve similar purposes. For instance the dakimakura is a form of bolster or body pillow in Japan. In Indonesia, it is known as a Guling and is usually cylindrical in shape. In ancient China, stone pillows were very popular, as they were believed to be very good for health. They were used since the Ming Dynasty and were believe to cure various types of ailments such as headaches.
